PRODUCTION DURING 1997-1998
RCF produced 1031 coaches during the financial year 1997-1998. 91 coaches including 19 Air Conditioned coaches were turned out in the month of January 1998. These coaches are equivalent to 133.6 ECU. 
A total of 87 coaches including 20 Air conditioned coaches were turned out in the month of February 1998. These are equivalent to 109.2 ECU. The outturn for the month includes one MEMU trailer coach, one RA coach and one IRY/IR 20 AC Chair Car cum Guard's compartment.

In the month of March 1998, Rail Coach Factory has manufactured 97 coaches, which includes 25 Air Conditioned coaches, 3 MEMU/MC coaches, 8 MEMU/TC coaches, 5 RA/AB coaches, 2 Oscillograph Cars and one OHE car. These 97 coaches are equivalent to 130.8 ECU.

RCF has manufactured a total of 1031 coaches of different types including 200 Air Conditioned coaches during the financial year 1997-1998, which is higher than Railway Board target of 1020 coaches for the year. The cumulative coach production of Rail Coach Factory since commencement of coach manufacturing in 1987 comes to 7367 coaches till March 1998.

Rail Coach Factory have achieved several firsts in the history of development of passenger rolling stock of Indian Railways. It has developed Indian Railway's first AC 3 tier coaches which has become very popular among the passengers.

The first new design IRY/IR20 rake was developed and manufactured at Rail Coach Factory. This is a result of joint collaboration effort between RDSO and RCF. Two coaches of this rake are now under service trials in Delhi - Dehradun Shatabdi since January 1998 and passanger's response has been very encouraging. These coaches shall be inducted in full rake service shortly.

The thrust in design and development is directed towards cost reduction, improvement in passenger amenities and comfort, safety of operation and reliability of equipment.
