Rail Coach Factory  (RCF) the youngest   coach Production Unit  of  Indian Railway  was set up in 1986 at Kapurthala. It commenced production on 19.9.87 and turned out its' first coach of  ICF design with all coil bogie on 31.3.98. With its  state of the art  facilities RCF has manufactured different types of coaches  mainly Air-conditioned ones in a very  short span of time besides the conventional product mix being manufactured by Integral Coach Factory, Madras. The manufacture of  3-tier  AC coaches  with   roof  mounted  AC units  both  self-generating  type  and end-on generation  type  has  revolutionised  travel  in  the  country. RCF  has  also  turned  out   with collaboration with  RDSO and assistance from UNDP a  new  design of AC coach - IRY with IR20 bogie. This coach  has been acclaimed  and  appreciated  by the travelling public and has set new standards in  travelling comfort. The bogies  have  flexicoil  springs, hydraulic  dampers and disc brakes.

RCF has so far turned out approximately 8179 broad gauge coaches as on 1.1.99 out of which more than 300 AC coaches  are  running  on all  prestigious  trains like Shatabdi and Rajdhani Express.
